Niina Lehtonen Braun & Mirka Raito
Woman Was Not Alone
22 July–14 August 2022
You can meet the artists at the gallery on Friday 22 July from 12 pm to 5 pm.
The joint exhibition by Niina Lehtonen Braun and Mirka Raito is based on the intensive correspondence that began during the pandemic and became an essential part of both artists’ studio work. A text written by Emma Puikkonen based on letter quotations is also part of the exhibition.
—But! The mail came last night just before bedtime! I heard a slam and went to have a look: a light blue envelope. On the rear side a picture of a woman, with colourful balloons floating out of her stomach………I feel my brains, like a pear, to see if it’s ripe; it will be exquisite by September…………… A letter is also a way of loving. I’m inspired by the ones I write to. Most often by their thoughts? …………… And what could I mention about the soul of a model – there they sit and someone gives them something from what surrounds them, what radiates from them, softens everything and this is what one wishes to paint…… but a human has so much more than their thoughts, something they are not aware of consciously………. I need to use three or even five dots, they include the reaches/flames that we wrote and which don’t fit in even by shoving, how could one place all the years in a row there is just no way no way……….
The artists’ work has been supported by the Alfred Kordelin Foundation and the Kone Foundation.
