Stranger, massless

On the outer side of my index finger, against the skin of my palm,
there is a specific area for all of you – a memory trace.
Through the nightly curtains (the coming light).

Eyes shut I mend yesterday with you.
I wash your back. Oil is to be applied directly on the wet skin – no drying!
Light beams travel across the ceiling.

There is a passage through only when translucent, weightless.
At the speed of light.

I open the window.
Morning is already near, isn’t it?

This cotton batiste was dug deep in the soil by me on an island in Helsinki for two years. During this period, with the firm grip of dirt around it and all three states of water – liquid, gas
and solid ice – the batiste gained skin-like properties. By taking a new, 20-meter-long batiste with me to the sea, I created a human-sized bandage of it. Throughout the month of July, as a daily ritual, with the moist bandage, I revived the unearthed batiste and returned its water back to it.

Anna Broms is a Helsinki-based artist in the field of expanded painting. She develops situations with an interest in porousness and restlessness, in particular. Rather than being solid objects, her works are ever-evolving subjects. Her process-oriented practice has a delicate ecological approach to materials.
Broms holds an MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of the Arts Helsinki.
