List of works

The starting points for Camilla Mihkelsoo’s solo exhibition Other lives are Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein (1818) and the thoughts of various ghosts and moving in time inspired by the novel. Ghosts are usually seen as a metaphor for something that existed or happened in the past, but they can also refer to personal hopes, sorrow or secrets.

The works center on children and women. The figures in the paintings look directly at the viewer or on purpose look past the viewer, avoiding eye contact, as if they already knew what is expected of them. The artist is, in particular, interested in the inner world of the figures in her works.

Some of the portraits are based on old black and white photographs that the artist found. The forgotten people in the photographs are in a way ghosts from the past who get new lives through the paintings.

Camilla Mihkelsoo (b. 1978) lives and works in Helsinki and Italy. She earned her Master of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of the Arts Helsinki in 2020 and graduated from the Free Art School in 2014. Mihkelsoo’s works have been on display at various solo and group exhibitions in Finland. The artist’s works are included in the collections of the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation / Rovaniemi Art Museum and the Saastamoinen Foundation and the Finnish state art collection.

The exhibition has been supported by Taike Arts promotion centre Finland
