The starting point for the exhibition was an idea to promote drawing, for once, from its position of a concubine to the main character of an exhibition.
Sixteen artists take part in the exhibition: painters, photographers, printmakers, video and installation artists and sculptors. For some, drawing is the closest and most personal form of art. For others, it has been a way in their childhood to find their artistic calling – and so fascinating it has become a profession. Some consider sketching an essential part of their work; some have lost drawing and later found it again.
With the exhibition a catalogue will be published in which the artists discuss drawing in their own words – be it their personal favorite, or, in some cases, their pet hate – and its importance to them as an art form. This time, the text was not supposed to be analytic: it could also be a declaration of love. In fact, this anthology of texts became a small-scale pamphlet for drawing.
The exhibition is a part of the HUUTO TUOTANTO (‘Huuto productions’) series, realized through the contacts of Galleria Huuto and its member artists on a shoestring budget and bringing interesting and thought-provoking exhibitions and other projects by international artists to Helsinki.
