On Certainty
28.3.-21.4.2024

The exhibition depicts a person seeking certainty and the paradoxical nature of this aim. Drawing on personal experiences, the works are an empty moment of contemplation, a message from somewhere in between.

The theme of the exhibition is uncertainty, constantly affecting our lives, and various compulsive habits and repetitive displacement activities to overcome or to eliminate that feeling of uncertainty. It all starts with doubt which, when it reaches neurotic proportions, becomes a barrier for the individual, gradually tearing them away from reality. When examining distrust towards what are considered normal situations, we also examine the relationships that connect a postmodern human to the world.

The name of the exhibition refers to Ludwig Wittgenstein’s book Über Gewißheit (On Certainty in English), published posthumously in 1969. In this collection of short notes, he examines the relationship between language and the world: The question of what we actually know when we say that we know something. For the exhibition, the key element is the atmosphere that can be read between the lines, obsessively returning to the question of the certainty of knowledge. Can I be sure that this is my hand?

Joakim Pusenius (b. 1984) works with film, photography and installations. His artistic work makes use of various mediums, but it can be deemed to start from and return to film and its special relationship with time and memory. In his artistic work, Pusenius focuses on the human condition. The characters found in the broad spaces in his works rarely tell their own stories but always become part of a larger whole or a situation that they witness. Pusenius graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 2014 and continued his studies at Le Fresnoy – Studio National des Arts Contemporains from 2016 to 2017. His works have been shown at the experimental film festival Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin in several years.
