KasVain (“Tumor”)
Sculptures
The basis for my exhibition is the esthetics of ugliness. I examine elements of destruction and decadence humorously, playing with images and figures of speech.
KasVain (“Tumor”) is a porcelain sculpture that resembles a mushroom cloud. This horrifying symbol of masculinity, power, and fear has become a strange growth with a cauliflower-like surface; a kind of a feminine phallus. Fat Man has become Slim Girl.
Kakkakukkaset (“Poo Flowers”) is a series of sculptures cast in bone china that combines the nauseating aspects of human excretion and the beauty of flowers. Whether this is genuine lavatorial art or a topsy-turvy tribute to dog-owners who leave the turds of their best friend on the fresh snow, as if on a tray, I don’t know.
At least lots of humor – or poo-mor? – is involved. Kakkakukkaset is a follow-up to my flower theme, the other parts of which are a series called Seinäkukkasia (“Wall Flowers”, 2007–08), and Asfalttikukkaset (“The Asphalt Flowers”), sculptures of concrete that will be completed in the fall of 2009 and placed in the yard of Helsingin Normaalilyseo School.
