Paintings from the Water’s Edge

Being in and near water is important to me. In my paintings, I explore the surface of the water – from below, above and at surface level. My observations are quick and constantly changing, as the experience is influenced by the flow, temperature and clarity of water, the structure of the bottom, aquatic plants, the surrounding sounds… The effect of water is calming in its intensity, helping one block out unnecessary dis-tractions. Water provides physical support. It also pulls you in, and the possibility of danger is ever present.

For me, observations often involve movement. How does it feel to climb a hill that offers a wonderful view of a lake? When reaching the top, I am out of breath, thirsty, my knee aches and I am dazzled by the sun. Observations also emerge along the way. A tree branch scratches my cheek, I stumble on a rock or a hole. Observations emerge both near and far. Movement activates my senses. This all-encompassing feeling is what I want to convey through my paintings.

While examining the concrete surface of the water, I have also reflected on how life carries us through – sometimes better, sometimes worse. The difficult global situa-tion, environmental issues and my own aging weigh on my mind. In difficult times, we try to stay above the surface or at least near the surface.
