Mark Rothko Project
– Working on the Spatiality of Color
Galleria Huuto Jätkäsaari – Jätkä 1
7.-29.4.2018

Sampo Malin’s solo exhibition at Galleria Huuto, Mark Rothko Project – Working on the Spatiality of Color, is a study of color and layers of color as spatial art. Malin’s exhibition has been inspired by the layered color field paintings made by Mark Rothko (1903–1970) since the late 1940s. The works in the exhibition have arisen from questions: If Mark Rothko had been interested in three-dimensional expression, what would his art have been like? How would his color-based works have developed?

The Mark Rothko Project does not create reproductions of Rothko’s works. Instead, it offers viewers spatial color experiences, experiences of color as a mass and an opportunity to step into the work. The exhibition is about play and experiments with painting and three-dimensional art. Malin has used, for example, water, ink, colored lights, felt, sand and projections in his works.

Sampo Malin (b. 1977) graduated from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in 2007. Since then he has taken part in group exhibitions in both Finland and abroad. In addition, he has had several solo exhibitions. Malin often creates exhibitions that are different from each other and built around a certain theme. What his works have in common is their unassuming and playful nature and the dialog between true and untrue.

The exhibition is supported by Arts Promotion Centre Finland.
