Matilda Enegren
Stay Put
7.1.-30.1.2022
The exhibition features portraits and paintings based on observations of my surroundings.
In my work, I am interested in what is specific but at the same time commonplace. I paint aspects of life, sights that draw my attention, and I strive to identify the amazement and emotional response they evoke. By lingering on and paying attention to moments and people while working, I am able to slow things down.
The people in my portraits are friends and acquaintances who I asked to sit for me for some hours in my studio. I paint in daylight and rely on a kind of spontaneous logic, in which a person’s characteristics and presence are the key elements. I approach portrait painting with an interest in here and now and what happens both psychologically and in terms of painting when meeting the subject of the portrait.
