PAINTINGS
Galleria Huuto Uudenmaankatu
11.5.–22.5.2005
As I started painting from the pictures from Crete, I thought that as a result there would only be left the rhythm and colours from the landscapes. That’s how the process has gone before. This time instead, I painted my landscapes directly from the photographs. I enjoyed the precision and concentration the work required.
At the same time with the cretan landscapes I have been painting inner landscapes, where colours create spaces free from the forms. These different ways of painting have complemented each other bringing depth and new colours into my paintings. In the exhibition there are also the watercolours I have painted on my first trip to Crete.
When I returned to Rethymnon on my holiday to Crete, I felt strongly as coming back home. On that trip I painted enthusiastly: dark, deep caves where red and blue come together creating gold.
I learnt the language and moved to Crete for a year: I painted and wandered on the mountains…
I returned still for a third time, maybe for to stay.
On these steep mountais, on the rough rocks
Close to you
Sitting on the edge of a cliff
I felt so strong and free
I looked at the eagle flying above the gorge
It was me
Only now after the time has gone by am I able to paint these pictures and listen to old rebetika recordings and greak pop music, singing and dancing along. I don’t know whether I will return there anymore. Now the mountains, songs, freedom and joy live inside of me. They have become the shalter of my heart.
