Reija Palo-oja
Hymn
7.-29.12.2019
In my latest paintings, the subtle style of expression has taken an even more meaningful role. The landscape elements are combined with my interest in examining the ambivalent spatiality of painting, the various gestures of painting and the immaterial feeling. The works highlight the trust in the expressive power of painting as well as temporality, spontaneity and subtlety.
The exhibition is based on a referential theme, in which something personal and observations of world events compare to the fleeting moment when one is able to feel than an inevitable event is true. This imaginary, revolutionary moment is undefined and vague in shape. In my paintings, I try to give shape to this moment.
Behind the starting points for my work is also the idea of mutually exclusive, tense word pairs such as dense emptiness or condensed silence. Through these various elements, my aim is to capture silent intensity in my paintings. In the gallery space, the works form parallel entities that depict the same mental landscape, opening up different perspectives on painting. Generally speaking, my work is guided by my fondness for painting and my desire to find my place in the larger framework of the art of painting. Another core element in my work is the thought of being able to express something essential about the world by painting.
