Roma Auskalnyte
Abstract landscape
21.8. – 13.9.2020
We will not organise an opening reception because of the coronavirus epidemic.
“It is always what we do not see, that intrigues us the most.” During the video performance by interdisciplinary artist Roma Auskalnyte, something is reflecting from under the dress on the mirror. If a scenery will never be revealed, only the description of it exists?
“A DESCRIPTION OF AN ABSTRACT LANDSCAPE:
A BODY IN SPACE SURROUNDED BY EYES.
NO LIMITS AND NO DIRECTIONS. A FREE FORM. “
Black mirror comes from 17th century landscape artists’ mirror called Claude Glass. It was used to simplify forms and colours of the scenery. “You never see a clear image in the black mirror reflection, only the abstraction: an abstract form, almost the idea of yourself…” Roma
Roma Auskalnyte (1988 Silute Lithuania) is Helsinki based interdisciplinary artist. She is ex-ploring body and its “fleshness” as material in printmaking, the importance of gesture, labour time and repetition which are always hidden behind the final print. Those processes influenced her and they led to new, ambiguous transformations of her ideas. Roma analyse body and its’ surface, how to work with and to work on it. She tends to experiment with different medias from printmaking to performance or even photography looking for the right way to express her thoughts.
The exhibition has been supported by the Arts Promotion Centre, Finland (Taike).
