Rose-Mari Torpo
Luminous
1–25 February 2024
The paintings contain whispers, hints, vague wavering thoughts – quiet little visual messages. The works depict dreams, emptiness, repetition, the sound of the sea, light and reflections. The soundscape of the seaside cave is present in the works as splashes, echoes and rhythms.
Rose-Mari Torpo is a visual artist based in Helsinki, primarily working with painting. Her paintings focus on perceptions and sensory experiences.
This exhibition features works painted on felt, canvas and polyester using spray paint, ink and acrylics. The characteristics of the materials, the colors and the placement of the works in the gallery space form a comprehensive work of art. The lightness and transparency of the works painted on polyester and the movement of light contrast with the matte surface of the canvas paintings.
Rose-Mari Torpo’s paintings are based on color, material and experimentation. Her painting process is strongly linked to a sense of searching and following one’s intuition. Different materials and colors interact with each other in her works and guide the process. She perceives the act of painting and the experience of a painting as multisensory; paintings and colors can be both heard and tasted.
Rose-Mari Torpo (b. 1977, Rauma) lives and works in Helsinki. After graduating from Free Art School in 2003, she has participated in several joint exhibitions in both Finland and abroad.
