Combining sculpture and installation art, Antti-Ville Reinikainen’s works are like pieces found from an abandoned construction site: a rusty excavator bucket, a crane cab or a scrap yard claw. The impressive structures are positioned in the gallery space as if wistful visions, defying gravity and seemingly embedded into the walls. The core of the mixed media works is formed by wooden structures that are camouflaged under a layered surface treatment and among elements created with various casting techniques.
The works are a combination of precise design work and intuitive experimentation. The carefully and systematically built large waste claw ends up being filled with driftwood, canvas shreds and various other fragments. This is how the key theme of controlling and losing control also shows in the process of creating the works. In the dream-like works, natural elements are mixed with the tools of supervision and control. Through succumbing and clinging, obstructions and openings, the works examine a human in relation to breaking and temporariness.
Antti-Ville Reinikainen (b. 1980) lives and works in Helsinki. He mainly works with sculpture techniques, often combining them with other forms of visual arts such as video and painting. He is also actively involved in the Galleria Huuto board. This is Antti-Ville Reinikainen’s sixteenth solo exhibition.
