Susanna Autio
Airy-Fairy
5–27 March 2022
The Collins English Dictionary defines “airy-fairy” as follows: “If you describe someone’s ideas as airy-fairy, you are critical of them because you think the ideas are vague, impractical, and unrealistic.”
For a long time, I have felt the need for working spontaneously and freely. The works fea-tured in this exhibition were created within a short period of time. They are intuitive, exper-imental and perhaps even light. For me however, the entity, whose working title was “Lead vest and other necessary safety measures”, is a continuation of my old themes. I have been dealing with the themes of protection, security, hiding and being exposed for some time. However, now my works include a new layer.
Created using acrylics and fabrics, the works in my Airy-Fair exhibition are a collection of imaginary walls, shields, cartridge belts and lead vests.
Susanna Autio is a Järvenpää-based artist who chooses her working methods and materials based on the themes that are important to her. She often uses recycled materials. For each theme, she will select a certain material and technique that will determine the outcome. By combining various materials, she is able to create new forms or a distorted version of our reality. She is a member of the Association of Finnish Printmakers and the Association of Finnish Sculptors. Susanna Autio graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 2020 and has been working as an artist since 2000. She has had several solo and group exhibitions in Fin-land and abroad, and her works have been on display at various museums.
I wish to thank the Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike) for supporting my work in the form of Covid-19 grants.
