My works are ink drawings on paper. At first, there is a feeling, then a sight (which cannot be looked at directly or it will disappear) and finally a drawing. It takes time to create the works, without sketching. The black shadows offer protection against bright light.
At the moment, my works deal with decomposition and putting together, and silence in the middle of change. The drawings depict imaginary natural places that show the slow passing of time. The viewer is the only person in the middle of the work. And even though the landscapes appear cold and hard, I believe that they will touch the viewer on a personal level.

Nykänen’s drawings on white paper depict open spaces that follow their own laws. The images are carried by dream-like gravity. At first glance, the world of the drawings seems recognizable, natural elements and ruined cities without people. However, on closer inspection, the black ink line starts to lead the viewer towards something shapeless, to a point that is difficult to get out of.
